Why am I getting a license warning after create a clone or after restoring a backup or snapshot?

When you restore a backup or a snapshot of a VPS which uses a license (DirectAdmin, cPanel & Plesk), it is possible you will receive a warning the license has expired or is not valid for that IP address. This is always the case when you restore a snapshot on a different VPS, because that server will have a different IP address as the original VPS. The warning will therefore always be shown on the new VPS when creating a clone of a VPS. These control panel licenses are bound to a certain IP address and can not be active on more than 1 IP.

You could also receive such a notification if you restore a backup from a previous installation after installing another OS. For example, you have DirectAdmin running, install a default Ubuntu installation and then restore a backup. You will then get a license warning because when installing the 'other' OS the DirectAdmin license will automatically be cancelled.

    Resolving the issue

Depending on the type of license you will need to run one or more commands via the console of your VPS. You can log into the console by using the 'root'-credentials (unless you changed them) which you have received by e-mail when you ordered the original VPS.

    • DirectAdmin
      cd /usr/local/directadmin/scripts
      ./getLicense.sh 3558 auto
      systemctl restart directadmin
    • cPanel / WHM
      /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt

    • Plesk
      /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f UpdateKeys
