Connecting to a SandboxVPS from an IPv4 network

SandboxVPSs make exclusive use of IPv6. When connecting to a SandboxVPS from an IPv4 only network, additional steps are required. In this article we briefly point out the most valid options.

    HA-IP / HA-IP Pro

HA-IP is a highly available IPv4 and IPv6 address which allows you to forward any desired TCP traffic doorstuurt to a VPS. HA-IP Pro adds the functionality of a loadbalancer.

Both have the option of sending all IPv4 traffic to the attached VPS('s) as IPv6 traffic et vice versa. This allows you to connect to your SandboxVPS from an IPv4 network and similarly would also allow you to connect to an IPv4 only server from an IPv6 network.

    Using a VPN

VPN servers allow you to route your network traffic through the VPN server and use both IPv4 and IPv6 (unless the VPN server is hosted on an IPv6-only network). Traffic from your network is then sent via the VPN server(s) to your SandboxVPS as IPv6 traffic. You have two options for this:

    • Using a VPN provider: There are both free and paid VPN providers. In either case, you can route traffic through the VPN provider. It is important that you take security measures in this case, such as using SSH keys and/or changing your SSH port. Check in advance whether the VPN provider gives your VPN connection an IPv4 and IPv6 address and offers the option to have traffic go through the VPN servers.

    • Set up a VPN server yourself: This allows you to keep more control in your own hands. You do need your own/extra server (with an IPv4 address) for this. In principle, the operating system you use for this does not matter. You can configure a VPN server on a Windows Server, and every Linux distribution supports OpenVPN.
