The registry of an extension may choose to label certain domains as premium domains. This can occur with older extensions but is most common with new gTLDs. These premium domain names are often very generic words or (company) names, for which the registry charges a different and often more expensive price than indicated in the original proposition. This can sometimes be hundreds of euros per year more expensive and unfortunately we have no influence on this.
Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to indicate before an attempted domain registration whether the domain name is a premium domain. However you can often estimate in advance whether a domain name could possibly be a premium domain. In the article 'What is a premium domain name?' you will find more information about the most common characteristics of premium domain names.
Registering a premium domain name
When you order such a premium domain, you will see the following error message in your control panel after the order:
"Invalid attribute value; premium domain name. please accept premium price!".
This may mean that the premium domain has already been registered by another party or that the domain is being held by the registry. However, this does not always have to be the case! Depending on the domain name, it may still be possible to register the premium domain name.
If you'd like to know whether registration of the premium domain is possible and how much this domain name would cost, please contact our support department.
They can check with the registry whether the domain is still available and what the price of this premium domain is. This is of course without any obligation. If you do not accept this price, you can cancel the registration attempt of the domain name via your control panel.
To cancel the registration attempt you can go to the 'Domain & Hosting' tab in your control panel. Select the domain name without ticking the box and then click on 'Cancel action'. Any prepaid costs for the domain name will automatically be refunded.
In this article we've explained what the error message 'Premium domain name' means when registering a new domain name and what you can do about this.
