If you use email with TransIP (for example E-mail Only or one of our web hosting packages), you can easily request a backup of your emails via the control panel. We store backups of your emails for up to 7 days in the past.
This feature is not yet available for all mailboxes. We will gradually roll out this feature over the coming months.
Would you still like to request a backup of your email? Please contact support.
Once you request a backup for a specific mailbox, a temporary mailbox will be created containing the backup of your emails. You can then access this temporary mailbox via webmail or configure it in any email client, allowing you to save the desired emails or restore them to the correct mailbox.
In this article, we explain how to request the backup and how to restore the emails to your mailbox.
Request your email backup
Step 1
Go to the control panel and click on 'Email Hosting' in the left menu. Then click your domain name under 'Products'.

Step 2
In the overview, click on the three dots next to your mailbox and then click 'Backup'

Step 3
Select a date and time and create a password for your temporary mailbox.

Step 4
You will then see an overview with the settings of the temporary mailbox:

- Backup account: This is the email address you can use to access the backup account.
- Expiration date: After this date, the backup account will no longer be accessible and the backup will expire.
- Incoming mail server: imap.transip.email
- Port (incoming mail server): 993
- Outgoing mail server: smtp.transip.email
- Port (outgoing mail server): 465
Step 5
Using the settings above, you can set up the mailbox in any email client to access the backup. You can download/save emails or drag them to the correct mailbox to restore them.
It is also possible to log in to the temporary backup account via webmail. In webmail, you can save individual emails as .eml files.
Note:
- You cannot send or receive email with this temporary mailbox.
- The email backup expires automatically after the expiration date. Make sure you save or restore the backup to your actual mailbox before that date.
Restore the email backup to your mailbox
In this example, we use Thunderbird to transfer the backup from the temporary backup mailbox to the original mailbox. With Thunderbird, you can easily drag emails from one mailbox to another.
Step 1
During Step 4 of 'Request your email backup' above, you received the settings of your temporary backup. Use these to add the temporary mailbox to your email client, such as Thunderbird. For other email clients, you can use the Email configuration overview in the Knowledge Base.
The incoming and outgoing mail server settings are always the same; use the backup account as the email address.
- Backup account: This is the email address you can use to access the backup account.
- Password: The password you created for your backup account.
- Incoming mail server: imap.transip.email
- Port (incoming mail server): 993
- Outgoing mail server: smtp.transip.email
- Port (outgoing mail server): 465
Step 2
You can now save a backup on your computer, or drag the emails to the correct (non-temporary) mailbox:

Tips
- Make sure you check and restore everything you want before the expiration date of the temporary backup mailbox.
- In addition to your inbox, also check your sent and deleted messages. Click a message within one of these categories and then use Ctrl+A (Windows) or Command+A (macOS) to select everything.
- Custom folders (in the example the folder ‘Work’) can easily be dragged in their entirety to the correct mailbox
