Since November 2025, the .it registry has been carrying out checks on the WHOIS data of .it domains. When they suspect that a .it domain contains incorrect WHOIS data, they send an email to the email address listed in the registrant details requesting you to verify the data.
Attention: If you have received a message about the verification of your WHOIS data, be sure to do so within 30 days to avoid your domain being blocked. If you don't, you risk your domain being dropped entirely by the registry.
In this article, we explain how you can check your details and what you need to do if a check on your domain's owner details is performed.
What can I do if my .it domain has been selected for verification?
You will receive an email on the registrant’s email address informing you that you need to verify your registrant details. You will then have 30 days to complete the verification. To do so, send the correct details to our support department. With your permission, they will forward the details to the registry so they can verify your information.
- For private individuals: Copy of ID with your document number visible.
- For companies: Chamber of Commerce extract / copy of ID and VAT number. The VAT number must be valid according to the VIES page.
- For Italian individuals or companies, the Codice Fiscale is required.
During these 30 days, the domain will be locked, meaning no changes can be made to the domain. If the verification is not completed within 30 days, the registry will block your domain and no longer renew the domain, which means it will expire on the renewal date.
After the 30 days, you have an additional 45 days to complete the verification in order to reactivate your domain. If you do not complete the verification within these 45 days (75 days in total), the domain will be irrevocably terminated by the registry at the end of the current registration period.
How do I check my current registrant details?
To prevent your domain name from becoming unreachable in the event of a WHOIS accuracy check by the .it registry, it is necessary to keep your registrant details up to date. Therefore, check whether your details are still correct:
Step 1
Log in to your control panel using your username and password. Click on 'Domain' and then click on the .it domain name in question on the left-hand side. (Do not select the checkbox)
Step 2
You will now see the name, email address, and city of the registrant under 'Your web address details'. To view the rest of the registrant details, click on the gear icon to the right of 'Your web address details'.

Check whether all details are correct, including the details under ‘Additional details for .it domain names’.
It is important to check whether the Codice Fiscale is entered correctly when you are a person or company from Italy. If you are a company within the EU, make sure the VAT number is entered correctly, or the document number of your ID if the owner is an individual.
Step 3
Do you notice that the details are incorrect? Contact support via the ‘Contact’ button in the control panel.
Please note that changing the registrant details is not possible if your domain is currently undergoing the verification process. During the 75 days of the verification process (30+45 days) it is only possible to correct incorrect details, such as an incorrectly spelled name.
If your domain is not (yet) chosen for verification, you may want to change your details to prevent losing your domain. Changing the registrant details of a .it domain cannot be done automatically via the control panel and must therefore be carried out manually by us. The costs for this are €10 excl. VAT (€12.10 incl.).
