Different procedures .cn and .com.cn domains

Not every domain extension (TLD) has the same rules and procedures. The registry of each TLD determines what these rules and procedures are, such as the required information for registration, transfers, or changing owner details.

Every registrar, including TransIP, must follow the procedures of the registry. In this article, you will find the different procedures that apply to .cn and .com.cn domains.

    Trustee service

In the past, a trustee service could be used to register .cn and .com.cn domains. This allowed the domain name to be registered in the name of a so-called trustee, so that your identity and personal information did not need to be shared with the Chinese registry CNNIC.

However, there is currently too much risk associated with using a trustee service for .cn domains because the Chinese registry CNNIC has changed their rules:

The Chinese registry has decided that if one domain using the Trustee service violates the rules, it will block all domains using this service. This will make it impossible to transfer, change details, or renew these domains. This means that all domains using the Trustee service could then be terminated.

Both we and our .cn registration partner think this is an unacceptable risk, which has led our .cn registration partner to immediately stop offering the Trustee service.

    What does this mean?

All customers using the trustee service for a .cn or .com.cn domain will receive an email from us requesting them to update their owner details if they wish to keep their .cn or .com.cn domain. The steps for changing the owner details are explained later in this article. Due to the situation, we can perform this change for you once at no cost.

If you choose not to update the owner details, you risk the Chinese registry CNNIC blocking the domain name at any time. If you decide not to keep the domain name because of this, you can cancel it via your control panel.

    Owner change

An owner change for a .cn or .com.cn domain must be done manually and costs €50 excluding VAT (€60.50 including VAT).

Are you using the Trustee service? We can then perform the owner change free of charge once, because the Trustee service is being discontinued.

To change the owner details of the domain, we need some information and documents from you. Please send a message via your control panel with the following details:

If the domain owner is an individual:

    Information:

    • The domain owner's name - This must exactly match the details on the passport/ID card.
    • The domain owner's address including postal code.
    • The domain owner's telephone number.
    • The domain owner's email address.
    • The domain owner's passport number.

    Documents:

    • A copy of a valid passport/ID card (no driver's license) of the domain owner. The name on this passport must be identical to the name you provide in your information. Please note: The CNNIC registry requires that nothing on the document be obscured or altered.
    • A signed "Consent form" agreeing to the transmission of the relevant data and documents to our registration partner Key-Systems, who will then forward them to the Chinese registry CNNIC. Our support department will send this form to you once you submit a request. You can then return it signed. It is important that this is done by the person whose passport/ID copy is being used.

If the domain owner is a company:

    Information:

    • The company name of the domain owner - This must exactly match the details registered with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK).
    • The domain owner's name - This must exactly match the details on the passport/ID card.
    • The domain owner's address including postal code.
    • The domain owner's telephone number.
    • The domain owner's email address.
    • The Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number of the domain owner.

    Documents:

    • An extract from the Chamber of Commerce (KvK), not older than 3 months, of the company that is to be the domain owner. The company name on this KvK extract must be identical to the company name you provide.

We will forward the data and documents to our .cn registration partner Key-Systems. They will then forward the data and documents to the Chinese registry CNNIC, who will perform the verification and the owner change.
