DNS Belgium, the Belgian domain register, is checking the WHOIS details of .BE domains more regularly.
The identity verification can take place whenever you register a .BE domain. In the past, verification was only asked when a registration was seen as suspicious. In addition to that, you will now also have to verify your identity when the registrant information is possibly incorrect or insufficient.
Verifying your identity means you will have to prove to the register that you are the person who registered the .BE domain. You are asked to show an ID, which has to match the name listed in the registrant information of your domain. It is therefore important to register your domain with the correct information.
Is the registrant information of your domain incorrect? Change your registrant information first by following the steps in the article 'Changing the registrant of your domain name'.
How do I recognize the identity verification?
You will receive an email from DNS Belgium, which will be sent to the email address listed in your registrant information. In the email, they ask you to verify your identity.
- Dutch registrants can verify their identity via a link in the email, using iDIN.
- Belgian registrants can verify their identity via a link in the email, using Itsme or eID.
- Other registrants can verify their identity via a link in the email, using Onfido.
As an alternative, it is possible to upload the documents via the DNS.be portal. The instructions can also be found on DNS Belgium's website.
The instructions will also be shown when visiting your domain name. You can recognize the page by the image below.
Before the verification is complete, the domain will remain registered but can not be reached. After the ID is approved, the domain will become reachable after one hour.
Attention: Do not send your identification documents to TransIP, but follow the instructions in the email or on DNS Belgium's website. They have created an instructional video for the online verification, which can also be found on their website.
