    .fr

.fr is the domain extension associated with France and is managed by the French registry Afnic. Domain extensions associated with countries are called country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD).

On this page you will find information about .fr domains that you register with TransIP.

    Registration

    • When registering a .fr domain, additional information is required:
      • If the registrant is a person, indicate whether the registrant's information is shown in the WHOIS details.
      • If the domain owner is a company, a VAT number is required along with the country in which the company is located.
      • Further explanation can be found in the article: Verdere toelichting vind je in het artikel ‘Which additional information is necessary for a .fr domain name?’.
    • A .fr domain may contain a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 63 characters.
    • Emojis are not available for .fr domains. However, the use of special characters/punycode is possible. A comprehensive overview of which extensions allow which special characters can be found on the website of IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
    • .fr domain registrations are annual and are automatically renewed at the end of the registration period of a year.
    • It is mandatory for the registrant and the administrative contact to use an address in the European Union. If you do not have an address in the EU, the Trustee Service will be offered at checkout.

    Transfers

    • Transferring a .fr domain is always done with a transfer code. You can always request this at your current registrar. More information about transferring your domain name can be found here.
    • The transfer code is only visible in the control panel whenever there is no active trustee service for your .fr domain. You can remove the trustee service by changing your address to an address in the European Union.
    • Transferring a .fr domain can take up to 8 days. Your current registrar can sometimes speed this up by confirming the outgoing transfer.

    WHOIS

    • You can update all WHOIS data of your domain via the control panel. Follow the steps in the article 'Changing the registrant (owner) of your domain name'.
      • After changing the owner details, you will receive an email from Afnic. You must confirm the changes using this email.
      • An owner change can take up to 14 days.
    • It is not allowed to use the same information for the registrant and the technical contact.
    • The technical contact must be a company.
    • It is mandatory to use an adress within the European Union for the registrant and the administrative contact. If you do not have one, you can use the Trustee Service.
    • WHOIS details are public for .fr domains. You can however opt to hide the registrant's details when you register a .fr domain.

    Other

    • When you cancel a .fr domain name, the domain enters a Quarantine period (also known as 'Redemption period') for 30 days. During these 30 days, the domain can still be restored. After the 30-day period, the domain becomes available for registration again.
      • The registry charges fees for reactivating domains.
    • You can use a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 nameservers for .fr domains.
