    .it

.it is the domain extension for Italy and is managed by the Italian registry Registro. Domain extensions associated with countries are called country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD).

On this page you will find information about .it domains that you register with TransIP.

    Registration

    • When registering a .it domain, additional information is required:
      • A registration number:
        • For individuals: A passport number.
        • For companies: The Chamber of Commerce number.
      • If the domain owner (company or individual) is from Italy, the 'codice fiscale' is required. Every Italian company or individual has this 16 character long number.
      • A VAT number whenever the domain owner is a company.
      • Further explanation can be found in the article ‘Which additional information is necessary for a .it domain name?’.
    • .it domains may contain a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 63 characters.
    • Emojis are not available for .it domains. However, the use of special characters/punycode is possible. A comprehensive overview of which extensions allow which special characters can be found on the website of IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
    • .it domain registrations are annual and are automatically renewed at the end of the registration period of a year.
    • It is mandatory to use an address in the European Union for the registrant. If you do no have an address in the EU, the Trustee Service will be offered at checkout.
    • If you want to use your own nameservers, they must meet certain requirements within 30 days of registration. You can check this using the registry's namerserver check tool. The TransIP nameservers meet these requirements.

    Transfers

    • Transferring a .it domain is always done with a transfer code. You can always request this at your current registrar. More information about transferring your domain name can be found here.
    • Transferring a .it domain can take up to 5 days. Your current registrar can sometimes speed this up by confirming your outgoing transfer.

    WHOIS

    • Changing the owner details of a .it domain can not be done automatically, so it has to be done manually by us. To do so, you can contact us via the 'Contact us' button below. The price for this is €10,- excl. VAT (incl. €12,10).
    • It is mandatory to use an address in the European Union for the registrant. If you do no have an address in the EU, you can use the Trustee Service.

    Other

    • When you cancel a .it domain name, the domain enters a Quarantine period (also known as 'Redemption period') for 30 days. During these 30 days, the domain can still be restored. After the 30-day period, the domain becomes available for registration again.
      • The registry charges fees for reactivating domains, which we must pass on to you.
    • You can use a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 nameservers for .it domains.
    • The registry imposes certain requirements for .it domains.
      • The TransIP nameservers meet these requirements and are therefore always suitable to use in combination with a .it domain.
      • If you want to use your own nameservers, you can check if they are configured correctly via their nameserver check tool.
      • Important: If your nameservers do not meet the requirements within 30 days of registration, the registry may delete your domain name. Refunds are not possible in this case.
