Configuring the mail service on a VPS with MailEnable

On a VPS at TransIP, you can make free use of our own mail service, also known as ‘Carefree Emailing’. This gives you the opportunity to send outgoing emails via our mail servers (after a one-time configuration within MailEnable on your VPS).

By using the mail service, you don’t have to worry about your emails ending up in the spam folder because your reverse DNS or SPF record is not set up correctly, or that a blacklist prevents your emails from being delivered.

To set this up correctly on your VPS, you will always need to perform a few actions on your VPS to ensure that your VPS and domain names are authenticated for sending mail through our platform.

Configuring the VPS Mail Service in MailEnable

First, consult this article for setting up your DNS records and to retrieve your username and password.

    Step 1

Log in to your VPS via the VPS console or Remote Desktop.

    Step 2

Open MailEnable (the window that opens is called ‘MailEnableAdmin’). Then, click consecutively in MailEnable on ‘Servers’ > ‘Services and Connectors’ > ‘SMTP’ > ‘Properties’.

    Step 3

Go to the ‘Smart Host’ tab and check the options ‘Smart Host Enabled’ and ‘The remote server requires authentication’. Then, fill in the following details:

    • IP/Domain: vps.transip.email
    • Port: 587
    • Account name: The username you retrieve via the steps in this article.
    • Password: The password you retrieve via the steps in this article.

Finally, click on ‘Apply’ > ‘OK’ to apply the changes.

Possibly confusing, but the reason you use 'Smart Host' and not ‘Relay’ is that Smart Host forwards all outgoing traffic to the designated server. The Relay tab is primarily used to control which IP addresses or domains are allowed to use your server as an open relay.
