    .io

.io belongs to the British Indian Ocean Territory but is popular worldwide. This is because the extension is associated with 'input/output,' making it a popular choice for many tech startups.

On this page, you will find all the information about .io domains that you register with TransIP. Please note that different registrars may have different procedures. If your domain is not registered with TransIP, please consult your own domain registrar.

    Registration

    • A .io domain can contain a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 63 characters.
    • Emojis are not available for .io domains. However, the use of special characters/punycode is possible. A comprehensive overview of which extensions allow which special characters can be found on the website of IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
    • .io domain registrations are annual and are automatically renewed at the end of the registration period of a year.
    • After registration, the domain can not be transferred for 60 days.

    Transfers

    • You transfer a .io domain with a transfer code. You can find this in your control panel.
    • You can only transfer a .io domain to a different registrar after the domain is older than 60 days.
    • After every transfer there is a 5 day period where to domain can not be transferred again.

    WHOIS

    • You can update all WHOIS data of your domain via the control panel. Follow the steps in the article 'Changing the registrant (owner) of your domain name'.
    • .io domain registrations are not tied to a country or region and are therefore available for registration worldwide.

    Other

    • When you cancel a .io domain name, the domain enters a Quarantine period (also known as 'Redemption period') for 30 days. During these 30 days, the domain can still be restored. After the 30-day period, the domain can not be restored for 5 days, after which the domain becomes available for registration again.
      • The registry charges fees for reactivating a domain, which we have to pass on to you.
    • You may use a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 13 nameservers for a .io domain.
