.es is the domain extension of Spain and is managed by the Spanish registry Dominios.es.

Registration

• When registering a .es domain, additional information is required:
  • An identification number for the registrant, the administrative contact, and the technical contact.
    • For individuals: A passport number.
    • For companies: The Chamber of Commerce number.
    • Whenver using a NIE number (foreigner identity number), make sure you omit the dash.

• Only the owner/registrant of the domain name can be a company.
• The administrative and technical contact have to be a person.
• .es domains may contain a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 63 characters.
• Emojis are not available for .es domains. However, the use of special characters/punycode is possible. A comprehensive overview of which extensions allow which special characters can be found on the website of IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
• .es domain registrations are annual and are automatically renewed at the end of the registration period of a year.

Transfers

• A .es domain is not transferred using a transfer code. Whenever you request your domain at a new registrar, you will receive an email from the Spanish registry with 2 links. You can either confirm or cancel your transfer with the links in the email.
  • You have 10 days to confirm the transfer
  • The email is sent to the email address of the administrative contact.
• It is not possible to change the owner details during a transfer, these have to be done separately.

WHOIS

• Changing the owner details of a .es domain can not be done automatically, it has to be done manually by us. To do so, you can contact us via the 'Contact us' button below.
  • The price for an owner change is €100,- excl. VAT (incl. €121,00).
  • Keep in mind that changing the owner details can take several days (and sometimes weeks).

Other

• When you cancel a .es domain, you receive an email from the Spanish registry asking you to confirm or deny your cancellation.
  • If you confirm, the domain enters a Quarantine period (also known as 'Redemption period') for 35 days. During these 35 days, the domain can still be restored. After the 35-day period, the domain becomes available for registration again.
  • If you deny, you have until the end date of your current contract term to reactivate the domain. Note: Your domain is unreachable during this time. After the term of your domain name has expired, the domain is available for registration again.
  • The registry always charges costs for reactivation, which we have to defer to you.
• You can use a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 7 nameservers for a .es domain.
