.nl

.nl is the domain extension of the Netherlands and is managed by SIDN. Domain extenstions for countries are called country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD).

On this page, you will find all the information about .nl domains that you register with TransIP. Please note that different registrars may have different procedures. If your domain is not registered with TransIP, please consult your own domain registrar.

Regstration

• A .nl domain can contain a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 63 characters.
• Emojis are not available for .nl domains. The use of special characters/punycode is also not possible.
• It is not possible to register a .nl domain using a post office box as an address.
• .nl domain registrations are annual and are automatically renewed at the end of the registration period of a year.

Transfers

• Transferring a .nl domain always requires a transfer code, which can always be requested at your current registrar. More information about transferring your domain name can be found here.
• As soon as the transfer code is entered correctly, the transfer takes place almost immediately.
• A registrar/provider is obligated to provide the transfer code to the rightful owner of the domain name within 5 days. If they do not cooperate, there is an escalation procedure for .nl domains through which the rightful owner can request their transfer code. In this case, please contact our support department.

WHOIS

• You can update all WHOIS data of your domain via the control panel. Follow the steps in the article 'Changing the registrant (owner) of your domain name'.
• The owner of a .nl domain cna request the non-public holder detials from SIDN. More information on this can be found in this article.
• You are not allowed to enter a post office box as the address in your domain's WHOIS data.

Other

• When you cancel a .nl domain name, the domain enters a Quarantine period (also known as 'Redemption period') for 40 days. During these 40 days, the domain can still be restored. After the 40-day period, the domain becomes available for registration again. The registry charges fees for reactivating domains, which is why reactivating will cost :
  • For .NL domains previously registered at TransIP: €50,- excl. VAT (€60,50 incl. VAT).
  • For .NL domains registered with another provider: €100,- excl. VAT (€121,- incl. VAT).
